Every business application we build includes a dashboard, and every dashboard is a design challenge. ## Start with the Decision, Not the Data Before designing, ask: "What decision does this page help the user make?" For a retail POS dashboard, the daily decision is: "Is today on track, and does anything need my attention?" That gives a clear hierarchy: 1. Today's sales total (headline) 2. Comparison to yesterday/last week (context) 3. Low stock alerts (action needed) 4. Pending payments (action needed) ## Visual Hierarchy Rules **Big numbers for the most important metric.** One number, not five. **Tables for comparison, charts for trends.** Match visualization to the question. **Color for meaning, not decoration.** Red = attention needed. Green = fine. Everything else neutral. **White space is not wasted.** Dense data needs parsing room. ## Mobile Dashboards Business owners check dashboards on phones. The headline number must be visible without scrolling. Touch targets must work one-handed. Swipe between time periods.
